Abstract

In this research, we intend to investigate the category of amphibology and how and why it is used in Khaghani's Elegies and Hafez's lyric sonnets. The category of amphibology in this article is limited to ambiguous amphibology and does not include its other sub-categories, such as: balanced amphibology, translation amphibology, synonymous amphibology, evolutionary ambiguity, and so on. The basis of the definition of amphibology, in addition to its background in rhetorical books, will be newer definitions that subsets of them can be listed as follows:  Lexical amphibology, Metaphorical amphibology, Structural amphibology, Recruitment, additional amphibology and Poly-dimensional amphibology. The result obtained shows that Hafez has taken precedence Khaghani in all forms of amphibology, except application, and one of the differences between the use of amphibology in works of the two poets is that Hafez paid special attention to amphibology with Arabic words and also The structural amphibology that results from the poet's nobility over the various capacities of language has a significant advantage in his divan.
