“From Rumi’s perspective, ‘Aagahi’ (awareness) is a true form of understanding that governs both the material and metaphysical worlds, considered the ultimate purpose of creation. Rumi, who believes human worth lies in thought and intellect, employs various methods throughout the Masnavi to impart this awareness to his audience, aligning with his didactic and mystical aims. These methods include using multivoiced narative, his interactions with disciples and associates, and creative adaptations of previous sources. Among these sources, Sanai and Attar are the most significant and influential poets for Rumi, with their works constituting the majority of the Masnavi’s references. To substantiate this claim, this research compares and analyzes two stories from the Masnavi, “The Caliph and the Arab” and “The Elephant in the Dark House,” with their similar counterparts found in Attar’s Musibatnameh and Sanai’s Hadiqat al-Haqiqa, respectively. We have elucidated and interpreted the changes and adaptations Rumi introduced in these narratives. The findings of this library-based research, conducted using a descriptive-analytical approach with content analysis, reveal that since Rumi is a poet of thought and awareness, his primary motivation behind most of these changes and adaptations was to provide insight and awareness to the audience.
