The Masnavi al-Ma‘nawiyya al-Khafiyya is a poetic counterpart (naẓīra) to Rumi’s Masnavi-ye Ma‘navi, composed by Ebrahim Suhrawardi, known by the pen-name Golshani (d. 940 AH), in approximately forty thousand couplets. Deeply influenced by the mystical teachings of Rumi and Ibn ‘Arabi, and grounded in his profound mastery of both rational and transmitted sciences, Golshani produced one of the most significant and substantial naẓīras to Rumi’s masterpiece—indeed, one of the closest in time to the life of Rumi and the composition of the Masnavi. The present study, conducted through a library-based method and founded on a critical edition prepared from an authoritative base manuscript, offers a detailed introduction to the work and its extant manuscripts, with particular emphasis on the ancient and valuable Aya Sofya manuscript no. 2080. It further examines the codicological features, orthographic characteristics, and stylistic dimensions of the poem. In addition, through a comparative analysis of manuscripts preserved in the libraries of Istanbul, Cairo, and Tehran, the linguistic, intellectual, and prosodic aspects of the work are investigated. The findings reveal that al-Ma‘nawiyya al-Khafiyya not only reflects the profound influence of Rumi’s Masnavi on later Sufi literature, but also exhibits remarkable independence in its narrative structure, symbolic language, and intellectual motifs. The present critical edition seeks to revive an overlooked link in the developmental chain of mystical masnavis in Persian literature and to highlight the literary and spiritual significance of Ebrahim Golshani in the history of Persian Sufi literature and the wider Islamic world.
